The Twentynine Palms Rotary honored Oasis Elementary School with the teacher and student of the month awards at their meeting of April 24.
Club President Dan Mintz introduced Rotarian John Cole, Chairman of the Youth Service committee, who explained to the club members and visitors how they work with the school principals to identify and honor outstanding teachers and students to support excellence in education. Oasis Elementary Principal, Dr. Jessica Miller, first explained why student Kalea Leopoldo was selected based on her achievements in academics, great attitude, and support for her fellow students. Then she introduced the teacher of the month, Emily Candelaria, as a great example of bringing a high level of positive energy, compassion for her students, and an innovative curriculum to her classroom. Cole then made a formal presentation of the awards (along with a gift certificate) to the honorees. The 29 Palms Rotary Club, established March 15, 1948, is the oldest service club in the Morongo Basin. Dedicated to community service, they meet Wednesdays at noon at the Little Church of the Desert Meeting Hall.
